The most hyped film of 2023 is here! And, in years past, we would usually qualify that statement by saying, “one of…” or “what is probably the…” before “most hyped,” but not this time. Why is that you ask? Well, the subject of this week’s review is a little film called The Flash. Ever heard of it? Of course, you have! Because the studio (Warner Bros.) has gone so unbelievably far out of its way to make this film as hyped as possibly even enlisting the help of Hollywood Superstar Tom Cruise and newly-minted co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn, who both publicly called the film one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. So, that leaves us staring down a familiar question: does The Flash live up to the hype? That’s right, the subject of this week’s review is the number 1 movie in the world and the top rated film on Letterboxd, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This film does everything bigger: the cast, the stakes, the animation, all of it. And in our spoiler-free Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review, we’ll let you know whether or not bigger means better when it comes to spider-man based multiversal expansions or if more spider-people does not necessarily mean merrier spider-people (that made no sense but I am keeping it). Hollywood is at war! It’s the Writers vs. the Studios as the WGA Writers’ Strike rages on and no one knows when it will end. Now that we are a few weeks into the strike and the sticking points have become clear, we decided to spend time discussing those demands from both sides and what it might mean for the duration of the strike. The end of an era. For better or worse, that’s exactly what Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 represents. James Gunn is, of course, exiting the MCU for an even cushier gig at the newly-renamed DC Studios. So, what does this mean for the Guardians? Who would remain from the Guardians after this film? Given that this is a spoiler-free Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 review, we can’t answer those questions but we will of course discuss this film, how we feel it wraps up the trilogy, and how we’d score it out of 10.
