Also, both Amazon Prime Video and Pixar announced layoffs this week so we discuss what that means for the streaming industry. Plus, out of the blue, Lucasfilm decides to quietly drop perhaps the biggest feature film announcement since Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Cam rants about a couple of movie delays and casting changes. This weekend’s box office and streaming slate featured a number of intriguing options for reviews but none that distinguished themselves as the clear frontrunner among the crowd. Our solution? A Double Review! In this episode, we took on a spoiler-free The Boy and the Heron review and a spoiler-free Leave the World Behind review to cover as many bases as possible before awards season takes over the film discourse. Both The Boy and the Heron and Leave the World Behind are fascinating films from filmmakers equally as fascinating. After all, legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki came out of retirement after 10 years to bring The Boy and the Heron to life. And visionary show creator Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot, Homecoming) takes on a feature length film for the first time since 2014, this time with an all-star cast (Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, etc.) in tow. We’ve made it to the great MCU pause. Sure, it’s a bit dramatic to even call a less than one year gap between films a pause. But the reality is that there has been A LOT of Marvel Cinematic Universe content since the Infinity Saga, so a pause like the one between The Marvels and Deadpool 3 is significant. Needless to say, the fan and critical reaction to every bit of Marvel Studios content after Avengers: Endgame has been mixed at best. So, now that two more tentpoles, Loki Season 2 and The Marvels, are in the books, where does the MCU stand heading into the pause? In this episode, we’ll answer that question including sharing our ratings for all Multiverse Saga movies and shows, a reaction to the Crisis at Marvel article from Variety, and speculation on what’s to come.
