M3GAN Review

So far in 2023, only one movie has captured the attention of casual and avid film fans alike, M3GAN. When a movie like this comes around (read: a horror movie with an obvious gimmick) it always begs the question: is this just another campy “B” movie that’s fun but not much else? OR is this a movie masterpiece in “B” movie clothing? In our M3GAN review, we tackle that exact question as we break down whether this film is so dumb it’s smart or just plain dumb. Plus, it’s a horror movie so we rate it on our Pee-Your-Pants-Meter from 1 to “pee your pants.” Finally, everyone’s favorite co-host returns with a M3GAN-themed game!

Roll out the red carpet! Or honestly probably any old carpet will do because it is just the Golden Globes. Hollywood’s second-rate movie and TV awards show is here, the 80^th Golden Globe Awards. The awards are back on national television this year which means we are forced to pay attention to them. So in this episode, rather than What’s Poppin’, we’re giving you a full Golden Globes Preview complete with reactions to each of the major movie award categories as well as picks on who we think should win in most of the categories. Just two days before we ushered in 2023, we got a late Christmas present from our friends at Netflix: a movie called White Noise, from writer-director Noah Baumbach. White Noise is based on an 80s novel written by Don DeLillo that for decades has been considered by many to be “unfilmable.” In our White Noise Review, we’ll discuss the cast, which includes Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, and more, the production, the narrative, and the themes before deciding if Noah Baumbach has done the impossible, filmed the unfilmable.

Out with the old, in with the new! Our first episode of 2023 is all about… 2023. In this week’s edition of What’s Poppin’, we’ll forego the movie and TV news and just focus on the 2023 releases we already know about. We discuss all the films for which we are most excited, least excited, most surprised to be excited, and more. New years always provide hope and promise and that goes for film as well. Avatar: The Way of Water Review

We are closing out 2022 with a BANG by reviewing perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year and a film that took 13 years to create, Avatar: The Way of Water. In 2009, Avatar was released and blew up the box office. Since that time, it has grown to become the highest-grossing film of all time and an iconic visual spectacle that everyone recognizes. In our Avatar: The Way of Water review, we’ll discuss if this film lives up to the hype, rights the narrative wrongs of the first film which many (us included) have accused of being overly derivative, and excites us for the remaining films in the series. Yes, we've already talked about this topic numerous times since Black Adam, but it appears the dust has not settled just yet. In this episode, we'll talk about Henry Cavill's surprise exit, Dwayne Johnson's failed coup, and what could possibly be next for the newly-minted DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran's leadership. Some call it “the most wonderful time of the year” but, here at PFB, we like to refer to this time of year by only one adjective… “Special.” By now you’ve almost certainly blown the dust off the covers of your favorite Christmas DVD cases and begun spending a few nights a week with a Christmas film or classic holiday special. This year, visionary director James Gunn is bidding for acceptance into that coveted group of cult holiday classics with his all-new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. This is new ground for both Gunn and the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, in our Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Review, we discuss what all worked (or didn’t) and whether or not this special does enough to earn its way onto the nice list and into our hearts and homes for years to come.

2019 was a superb year for film. From massive blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame to indie international cinematic masterpieces like Parasite, it had something for everyone. In the midst of that year, came a star-studded whodunnit that proved that new, original intellectual properties still had the ability to draw people to theaters. That film, Knives Out, is the predecessor to the subject of our review this week, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. In our spoiler-free Glass Onion review, we discuss our new cast of characters plus the return of Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc, writer-director Rian Johnson's second stab at the whodunnit genre, and all things in between.
