In this week’s edition of What’s Poppin’, we’ll forego the movie and TV news and just focus on the 2023 releases we already know about. We discuss all the films for which we are most excited, least excited, most surprised to be excited, and more. New years always provide hope and promise and that goes for film as well. The question is: will our picks be accurate? Or are we prematurely misjudging some of these films? Only time will tell! PLUS, stick around for a game at the end.

We are closing out 2022 with a BANG by reviewing perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year and a film that took 13 years to create, Avatar: The Way of Water. In 2009, Avatar was released and blew up the box office. Since that time, it has grown to become the highest-grossing film of all time and an iconic visual spectacle that everyone recognizes. In our Avatar: The Way of Water review, we’ll discuss if this film lives up to the hype, rights the narrative wrongs of the first film which many (us included) have accused of being overly derivative, and excites us for the remaining films in the series. At the risk of things changing before this episode even goes live, we are going to talk about DC Studios. Yes, we've already talked about this topic numerous times since Black Adam, but it appears the dust has not settled just yet. In this episode, we'll talk about Henry Cavill's surprise exit, Dwayne Johnson's failed coup, and what could possibly be next for the newly-minted DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran's leadership. Plus, more fuel was added to the Team Barbie vs. Team Oppenheimer bonfire as we now have our first real trailers for both films. Some call it “the most wonderful time of the year” but, here at PFB, we like to refer to this time of year by only one adjective… “Special.” By now you’ve almost certainly blown the dust off the covers of your favorite Christmas DVD cases and begun spending a few nights a week with a Christmas film or classic holiday special. This year, visionary director James Gunn is bidding for acceptance into that coveted group of cult holiday classics with his all-new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. This is new ground for both Gunn and the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, in our Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Review, we discuss what all worked (or didn’t) and whether or not this special does enough to earn its way onto the nice list and into our hearts and homes for years to come.

2019 was a superb year for film. From massive blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame to indie international cinematic masterpieces like Parasite, it had something for everyone. In the midst of that year, came a star-studded whodunnit that proved that new, original intellectual properties still had the ability to draw people to theaters. That film, Knives Out, is the predecessor to the subject of our review this week, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. In our spoiler-free Glass Onion review, we discuss our new cast of characters plus the return of Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc, writer-director Rian Johnson's second stab at the whodunnit genre, and all things in between. It has been 3 weeks since our last What's Poppin' episode and, in that time, Disney made the shocking announcement that Bob Chapek is "stepping down" and Bob Iger is returning as CEO. Bob Iger has perhaps the most illustrious résumé of any Disney CEO other than Walt himself. But now he returns to a company that is struggling financially and does so with a 2-year deadline to right the ship and name another successor. In this episode, we'll discuss all of the details of this massive reversal in direction and what it could mean for Disney both near-term and long-term.

*inhales* WAKANDA FOREVER! We have reached the end of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This film is certainly one of the most anticipated sequels we can remember for reasons both exciting and tragic. In our Black Panther Wakanda Forever review, we discuss everything about the movie from the opening scene to the post-credits scene and everything in between including the acting performances, production, and fit within the MCU. After the review, we stick around to do a post-mortem on MCU Phase 4 including ranking all of the films and shows as well as the phase itself in comparison to the Infinity Saga. A Netflix Original Sequel? That’s right! For the first time in PFB history, we are reviewing a sequel to a Netflix Original Film. How is this possible? Well, if you look back, Netflix Original films have not been around as long as you might think. In fact, Enola Holmes was one of the first Netflix films to be successful enough to warrant a sequel, so it is appropriate that the subject of our first Netflix sequel review is Enola Holmes 2. Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, and more return for the follow-up to Netflix’s surprise 2020 hit. In our Enola Holmes 2 review, we cover all of the headwinds facing any sequel and how Enola Holmes 2 handles them as well as whether this film justifies itself as another installment in this young series. Of course, we’ll also discuss that post-credits scene and all things Enola Holmes 2.
