Whether it is a legacy sequel or a re-quel, the Sanderson Sisters are officially back after 29 years in Disney+’s Original Film, Hocus Pocus 2. This movie broke the record for biggest premiere on Disney+ to-date, thanks to the many devoted members of the cult like following for the first Hocus Pocus film. But now the question is: were all those streaming hours worth it? In our Hocus Pocus 2 review we go full spoiler mode and discuss everything that made this film work and/or not work. When I heard they were making a movie called The Woman King starring Viola Davis, I figured it had to be a documentary. Viola Davis is undoubtedly the woman king of Hollywood thanks to her Academy Award Winning acting ability, but The Woman King is not a documentary. Instead, Viola Davis co-stars with Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, and more in the fierce and smashmouth true story of the Agojie warriors. “Based on a true story” movies are always a toss-up. So, I had to check it out to see if it fell into the same formulaic traps as other “based on a true story” films or if it used that powerful blade of Viola Davis’ to carve a new path altogether. This weekend in Anaheim was Disney's Convention for their D23 Fan Club, the D23 Expo. In recent years, this event has been a full-blown movie and television news event and this year was no exception. Though no one seems to be asking for them, the Disney Live-Action Remakes just keep coming. Okay, that sounds a bit harsh. The truth is that the live-action remakes are not all bad, some have even been quite good. But the struggle that each of the remakes has to overcome is providing a reason for its existence. So, here we are again. This time, Disney has decided to remake the beloved 1940 animated classic, Pinocchio. In our Live Action Pinocchio Review, we discuss if this remake manages to justify its existence under the guidance of legendary filmmaker Robert Zemeckis. Is this version better than the original? I’m not sure if everyone has noticed, but the term “Netflix Movie” is becoming increasingly more common these days. Not only that, but 9 out of 10 times when this term is used, it is used in a derogatory way, like “Hallmark Movie.” Something to keep in mind as, in this week’s episode, we embark on our Day Shift review (it’s a Netflix movie). On paper, this movie has everything you could ask for in an action comedy: vampires, violence, and Jamie Foxx. But as to whether this movie is the start of a new franchise or another tally in the “Netflix movie” column, you’ll have to decide that for yourself.
